Makoto Shinkai (新海誠 )Shinkai Makoto, born as Makoto Niitsu (新津誠 Niitsu Makoto, born February 9, 1973), is a Japanese director  ofanime and former graphic designer. A native of Nagano Prefecture, Shinkai studied Japanese literature at Chuo University where he was a member of juvenile literature club where he drew picture books. He traces his passion for creation to the manga, anime, and novels he was exposed to while in middle school. His favorite anime is Castle in the sky Castle in the Sky by Hayao Miyazaki. Shinkai has been called "The New Miyazaki" in several reviews, including those by Anime Advocates and ActiveAnime—comparisons which he himself calls an "overestimation".

5 Centimeters Per Second  is a 2007 Japanese animated romantic drama film produced, written and directed by Makoto Shinkai The film was finished on 22 January 2007.The first part of the film was released on Yahoo Japan as streaming video to Yahoo! Premium members from 16 to 19 February 2007.On 3 March 2007, the full length featured film had its theatrical premiere at Cinema Rise in Shibuya ,Tokyo.The film consists of three segments: "Cherry Blossom"  "Cosmonaut" and "5 Centimeters per , totaling about an hour of runtime. As in Shinkai's previous works. The film was awarded Best Animated Feature Film at the 2007 Asia Pacific Screen Awards . The DVD was released on 19 July 2007.


Synopsis : 

Split into three episodes, 5 Centimenters Per Second follows the tender romance and coming-of-age of Takaki and Akari. They first meet as fourth-graders, lonely souls who love the same books and become the best of friends. When Takaki moves far away, it marks the end of his childhood and an unforgettable friendship. In his high school years, he becomes the object of affection for a young surfer girl named Kanae. As adults, Takaki and Akari watch the cherry blossoms fall, alone in their memories. 5 Centimeters Per Second does not tell so much a story, but a feeling, a portrait of life and longing captured by a distant train, a melting snowflake, a falling blossom.


「每當來到那個人身處的地方，內心深處就會感到有點 痛。」 遠野貴樹與篠原明里自小學畢業後即分隔兩地。雖 然兩人之間持有對對方特別的思念，但是他們只能任由時間 無情地流逝。 終於在某天，貴樹終於決定要冒著大風雪去 見明里…… 本作品一共分成三編，分別是︰「櫻花抄」描述貴樹與明里 幼小愛苗的萌芽，與及他們重逢的一天；「太空人」是以貴 樹的高中同學澄田花苗對貴樹的思慕來詮釋；與片名同名的 「秒速５厘米」則描述各人內心之徬徨。 這是以「此時、 此地」的日本作為舞台，用抒情式畫面構成的連作短編動畫 作品！
